It is believed that the Church of the Madonna della Pietà
in Rocca Calascio
was built between the end of the 16th and the early 17th century as a sign of thanksgiving to the Madonna for the victory obtained by the local inhabitants over a big band of brigands, who, trespassing from the Papal State, had made their way from Campo Imperatore
to the possessions of the Piccolomini family.
It stands in an isolated position not far from Rocca Calascio, at about 1432 metres above sea level. The structure has an octagonal plan, with the outer side measuring 5.50 metres. The main Baroque façade faces south and its portal is surmounted by an edicolette, with a curved broken tympanum flanked by two empty niches.
The church is covered by a rounded pavilion vault. On one of the sides of the octagon is a masonry and stucco altar with a painting of Our Lady of Pity.
